Orangutans Rehabilitation
The effort of preserving the decreasing number of its population was started in 1973 by WWF by establishing a rehabilitation center just on the side of Bohorok river further up from Bukit Lawang village. The rehabilitation is meant to return back their natural behavior after years being domesticated by men. During the administration of President Soeharto the illegal capturing and trading of Orangutans was so worrying and was said to have made the number of its population decreasing steadily. Since 1934 a formal organization to protect the national park was already launched under the name of Yayasan Leuser International, formed by leaders from Aceh and North Sumatra. This non government organization got the support from European community, yet it is said give no impact to the actual action of conservation due to corruption of officials during the era, when local and observers could not prevent illegal logging and capturing of orangutans with the support of corrupt officials. In 1980 the government of Indonesia took over the rehabilitation center and finance this project with entrance fee earnings. At the rehabilitation center captured orangutans are treated carefully, quarantined, checked from diseases, trained to survive in the wild, and given monotonous food so it tries to find variation alone. Feeding only given twice a day. This is the feeding site that become the most interesting object for travelers. Feeding time is from 0800 - 0900 and 1500 - 1600. During feeding it appears 3 or 4 of them but depend also on the availability of food.
